Humanitarian Context

  • Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world and one of the post densely populated in Africa
  • For the last five centuries it has been immersed in ethnic and economic conflicts between the Hutus and the Tutsis
  • 70% of the inhabitants are concentrated in the north, where intensive and inadequate use of land is causing erosion, which affects its fertility
  • Since 1993 the war has killed more than 300,000 people, mainly civilians, and has generated hundreds of thousands of displaced people (800,000) and refugees (500,000).
  • In 2001 the country was hit by an epidemic of malaria, a disease whose prevalence has dramatically increased over the past decade. According to UNICEF, an African child dies of malaria every 30 seconds.
  • Foreign debt is equivalent to 175% of GDP and currently stands at US$120 per capita.
  • 20% of the urban population and 6% of the rural population is HIV positive. There are more than 160,000 AIDS orphans.
