Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world and one of the most densely populated in Africa. Since 1993 the war has killed more than 300,000 people, mainly civilians, and has generated hundreds of thousands of displaced people (800,000) and refugees (500,000).

- Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world and one of the post densely populated in Africa
- For the last five centuries it has been immersed in ethnic and economic conflicts between the Hutus and the Tutsis
- 70% of the inhabitants are concentrated in the north, where intensive and inadequate use of land is causing erosion, which affects its fertility
- Since 1993 the war has killed more than 300,000 people, mainly civilians, and has generated hundreds of thousands of displaced people (800,000) and refugees (500,000).
- In 2001 the country was hit by an epidemic of malaria, a disease whose prevalence has dramatically increased over the past decade. According to UNICEF, an African child dies of malaria every 30 seconds.
- Foreign debt is equivalent to 175% of GDP and currently stands at US$120 per capita.
- 20% of the urban population and 6% of the rural population is HIV positive. There are more than 160,000 AIDS orphans.
